What we have done
Major existing now working equipment includes: HF Ham Radio, VHF, Propane Heater, Radar, 2 solar panels; main, furling genoa, storm trysail, jib; storm jib; drifter; propane stove, 20 yr old diesel engine;
Existing but not yet working: Propane Hot Water, Autopilot, Watermaker, Refrigerator.
Replacements include: older Aries windvane (replaced); outboard for dinghy (replaced);
Deferred Maintenance
- Engine
- Extensive engine work - rewiring; heat exchanger cored, general maintenance
- Replaced gear shift and throttle linkage to engine
- Plumbing
- replaced all gross filthy water tubing with new runs.
- Water tanks - cleaned, repaired coated steel integral tanks; replaced inspection port gaskets
- Cleaned and repaired shower drainage and all pumps in bilges.
- Replace broken hand pump with foot pump in head sink
- Hull and Deck
- Structure - replaced corroded steel hull/wood deck edge flanges with new steel and wider flanges - transom, port chainplate, bow;
- Replaced port rub rail
- Stripped rubber coating off cockpit seats - varnished and painted. Painted aluminum footwell of cockpit; re powder-coated binnacle
- Rebedded all deck hardware;
- Replace zincs, bottom paint
- Repainted decks, topsides, cabintop with epoxy primer and polyeurathane paint; applied non-skid to decks and cabintop
- Rigging
- Aluminum mast - re-bedded all attachments, replaced some bent blocks with larger parts, replaced worn sheaves, replaced masthead lights with LEDs, checked wiring
- Interior
- Floor beams - beefed up floor beams in cabin; added hold-downs and lift tabs
- Removed and cleaned all ceiling and locker floor boards - painted, varnished, or replaced.
- Revarnished interior mahogany - table, shelving, ceiling boards, etc.
- Re-galvanized anchors; added storm anchor
Updates / Modifications
- Electronics / Navigation
- Updated the GPS; removed Loran C. Replaced depth sounder. Added second GPS; added handheld GPS; added mouse GPS to computer
- Added Sextant, hand-bearing compass and good binos from previous boat
- Acquired used Paper charts of Pacific
- Added PC Nav system (older laptop and Rosepoint Coastal Explorer) and downloaded all electronic charts for west coast and Hawaii
- Added Pactor modem and got our General Ham Licenses;
- added AIS and antenna splitter
- Replace depth sounder, add fish finder (got it cheap!)
- Canvas / Fabric
- Replaced cockpit line bags and storage sacks.
- Made new sail cover and boat cover. Restitched older awning.
- Corroded metal zipper pulls replaced with plastic pulls on existing cockpit cushions
- Made sturdy canvas bags for provisioning; made tool bags and wrench-rolls; made equipment covers for barbeque, outboard, water filter, etc.
- Made sail deck bag for staysail
- Re-canvassed existing dodger frame
- Made weather cloths for cockpit rails
- Made polarfleece curtains, installed curtain rods
- Made chaps for inflatable
- Engine
- Summer 2009 - completely rebuilt engine; replaced block
- Hull / Decks
- Replaced inadequate venting in lazarette with larger vents
- Strengthened beams inside port side of cabin lockers/pilot berth- excessive working was causing leaks under deck near chainplate;
- Replaced child-sized port pilot berth with four lockers and louvered doors - also helped stiffen hull near port chainplates.
- Repaired (cold-molded) entire front of exterior cabin where it was separating from deck. Strengthened beam here.
- Replaced lexan companionway panels with stouter mahogany panels
- Fabricated new stainless railings around cockpit to replace aging aluminum one; added stainless boarding ladder
- Added MOB pole; jacklines, harnesses
- Replaced aging aluminum radar spar with used stainless spar
- Added permanent boom crutch over dodger; bought used teak crutch with aluminum base and then powder-coated the base, recut the crutch for our round boom, and lined with high-density plastic liners; varnished crutch.
- Cut out bad steel and welded in new metal at stern, port chainplate, bow as well as engine exhaust; added stouter steel beams and flanges; redecked in these areas.
- Cut larger cockpit drains
- Painted topsides, deck, cabin top with 2-part epoxy (roll / brush)
- Applied nonskid (Kiwi Grip) on decks and cabintop
- Replaced stern cleats, chocks, and bow cleats with larger ones bolted through new steel flange.
- Fixed and built new mount for bilge pump
- Insulate hull (ensolite outboard and reflectix inboard)
- Added 44# Bruce anchor, 75# Fisherman and additional rodes.
- Interior
- Added cabin sole hold-downs (interior)
- Summer 2009 - replaced galley stove with newer unit
- Electrical
- Redesigned and fortified battery storage box; replaced battery cables; replaced batteries;
- Added dedicated starting battery
- added small inverter;
- Added CD stereo with USB/iPod input; added wooden box to house stereo
- Rewired obvious aging wiring, replaced some terminal ends, updated electrical wiring charts to spreadsheet
- Plumbing
- Added head holding tank to be legal in US
- Fixed bilge pumps - manual and automatic
- Rigging / Sails
- Added Preventers, new blocks, new running rigging
- Added used sails: nylon drifter, furling genoa; stays'ls; storm jib
- Replace Windvane with newer Aries Windvane (old one will be sold or used for spares)
- Tenders
- Added hard sailing dinghy (nesting) and (used) hypalon inflatable; also (used) outboard for inflatable
- Painted hard (nesting) sailing dinghy; rebuilt tiller
- Fabricated mounting system for hard dinghy on cabintop beneath boom
Luxuries
- Replaced (4) non-opening, scarred lexan ports with new opening bronze ports
- Made all new cabin cushions; added hypervent under all bunks; added back cushions for settee; new bedding (sheets, polypro blankets, pillows)
- Got used diving tanks and regulator
- Replaced some interior cabin lights with LEDs
- New propane Barbeque and small-bottle propane storage bin on rear deck
- Equipped galley - pressure cooker, tools, utensils, plates, knives, magma nesting cooking set, french press, thermoses, food storage containers, vacuum sealer; collapsible bucket for second sink; spice rack for 30 spices
- Recorded many hours of CDs onto hard disc in MP3 format; copied to thumb drives
- Replaced VHF with DSC capable VHF
- Improved removable nav seat (folding hard plastic chair on swivel mount)
To do (someday)
- Install new (used) bimini
- New headsails
- Fix watermaker, refrigerator, water heater, autopilot
- Add deck wash down (bought not installed)
- Add propane solenoid
- Replace aging awning
- Replace standing rigging
- Replace single shallow sink with double sink
- Figure out WeatherFax and dedicated ICOM 1000 receiver (never used)
- Re-secure wiring inside mast
