Travels: Hawaii

Summer 2008 was our first offshore trip. Phoenix sailed from Bellingham to Hawaii, northwest / downwind along the island chain, and then back to Washington between August and October 2008.

The trip confirmed two things: first that ocean passages are a lot of work and second that they produce an indelible experience. We want to go back and try a longer voyage next time. This first voyage has given us an appreciation of the boat - it is far more capable and experienced than we are. In addition we learned what watches work for us, how to save water (we got no appreciable rain in a month), and that stews are easier to eat than soups! We also had one major breakdown - our steering - and a successful jury-rig of the self-steering system / emergency tiller system. Also a note on some great capabilities of our PC navigation software and Communication software. Also notes on bringing your dog to Hawaii.

The trip home in September/October had new lessons. Injuries and more serious equipment problems leave us with some work to do before going out again. Description of this part of the voyage coming soon.
